Paint on my hands, glue on my sleeves. Beyond the daily play provocations, this is where I create: murals on the classroom walls, photobooth setups, hand-built materials, and other pieces made to bring our learning environment to life.
A hand-built photobooth, tinsel, ornaments, and all, set up for a little holiday cheer. Each child waited their turn, struck their own pose, and got their picture taken to send home as a keepsake. Small as it seems, moments like this build real confidence in front of a camera and a bit of patience while waiting for a turn, plus the fun of anticipation building up to it.
Letter templates turned into a little post office of their own, complete with a "Summer Mail" box waiting to be filled. Kids imagined writing home, some dictating their words and others scribbling their own, then dropped their notes in for delivery. It's early literacy practice in disguise, thinking about what to say, forming letters and shapes, and understanding that written words can carry a message to someone far away. We handed every letter to its family at pickup, and more than a few parents got a little misty-eyed.
A wall-sized mural built for our transportation theme of the month, planes, trains, buses, and everything in between, sketched by hand, projected onto the wall, then layered piece by piece to bring it to life. It became a favorite conversation starter, kids naming each vehicle, pointing out which ones they'd ridden in, and asking questions about how a train differs from a bus. Beyond the visual appeal, it built vocabulary around transportation and community, and gave us an easy way to talk about road safety and how people get from place to place.

Different tools, a lot of paint, and a handful of stencils to guide the mess. Children experimented with dabbing, brushing, and sometimes just smearing color across the page, then lifted the stencil to reveal the shape hiding underneath. It's a simple way to build fine motor control and hand-eye coordination, while the big reveal at the end teaches a bit of cause and effect too. The delight on their faces when they saw what they'd made was the whole point.

Three big rockets built for our space exploration theme, each one carrying the children's own faces as astronauts (blurred here for privacy) alongside their educators riding along too. It gave us a fun way to introduce space vocabulary, rockets, astronauts, planets, while also letting each child see themselves represented right there in the artwork. That sense of "that's me up there" does a lot for a child's confidence and connection to what they're learning. Families loved spotting their own little astronaut blasting off at pickup time.

Cut-out sunflower templates became a fine motor workout in disguise, little hands gripping, pinching, and pasting bees and butterflies exactly where they wanted them to land. Deciding where each bee should go took real concentration, and steadying small pieces with glue is trickier than it looks. Along the way it opened up some easy nature talk too, why bees visit flowers, what butterflies eat, and how it all fits into the same little garden scene.

Cotton pads became scoops of ice cream in this one, dabbed with color from a paint dropper and piled onto paper cones. Along the way it sneaks in some real fine motor practice, squeezing the dropper and stacking the "scoops" just right, plus a bit of color recognition as the shades blend and change. Simple materials, a little learning tucked into the mess.

A simple Remembrance Day activity, children arranged and glued their own poppy wreaths, working on those small pinches and placements that build fine motor control. It also gave us a gentle, age-appropriate way to introduce why we wear poppies and what the day means, without it feeling heavy for little ones. A small hands-on way to mark a meaningful day, and something a few of them proudly carried home to show their families.

A peek behind the scenes, these are the materials I put together for a presentation on emotional regulation. Building resources like these is part of the ongoing work of helping little ones name what they're feeling and find healthy ways to manage it, whether that's a big frustration, a case of the wiggles, or just an overwhelming day. Even outside the classroom, thinking through how to teach these skills is something I care a lot about getting right.
